Free and Reduced Price Meals Program

for Students in Grades K - 12

As our nation struggles through a difficult economic time, providing for school-age children can sometimes be a challenge.  Cutbacks in employment or freezes in wage increases can put great pressure on families.  This is a reminder to all families of students in the Waterford-Halfmoon Union Free School District regarding the availability of free or reduced meals for eligible students.  Federal guidelines provide for students to receive either a reduced meal price, or in some cases free meals, as offered through the district’s meal program.  If you are a current participant in the free/reduced meal program and believe that your income status has changed since the beginning of the school year, or if you would like to apply to the program, such applications may be submitted at any time.  You can access the application below.  Applications are kept confidential, and should be returned to the office of the Superintendent.

Summer Language and Culture Immersion

Students of the Waterford-Halfmoon Union Free School District will have the opportunity this summer to participate in a unique learning experience.  The Washington-Saratoga-Warren-Hamilton-Essex BOCES is offering area students the chance to enjoy the experience of learning the basics of second language along with learning about various aspects of cultures where the language is spoken. The teachers will engage students entering grades 1-11 in enjoyable activities while using the target language as much as possible. They will also introduce students to other countries and customs.  There will be a maximum enrollment per class. Classes will be taught by qualified teachers (trained language teachers and native speakers with teaching experience). In order to create a dialog among teachers, the classes will be team-taught if they reach minimum enrollment. The program is organized by a certified language teacher and school administrator. There will be a nurse on site. Each session will focus on different topics and activities; students may opt to attend two sessions if they are able. Students who participate in the Chinese program may be eligible for after-school and online courses during the 2009-2010 school year. There are also family activities planned so students can share the fun. Family members of program participants are invited to enjoy multilingual activities on Fridays. In addition, on the first day of class, there will be a class orientation. Parents and guardians are invited to attend this short introduction to the teachers and program.

Students in grades K-6 will receive information about the program through backpack mail.  Students in grades 7-11 can pick up information at the main office.  Scholarships are available for qualifying students.
